In Ten Of The World's Most Expensive Jewels

Fortunately, there is plenty to choose from at the top end of the jewelry market, where "big-stone" pieces from couture designers and jewelers along Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive and Bond Street are currently all the rage. "Diamond trading companies have done a good job of promoting single-stone and three-stone pieces recently, resulting in fewer overall unit sales, but much higher dollar value per piece," notes Nancy Robey, vice president of global new business development at the VNU Expositions Jewelry Group, which runs the Annual Couture Jewellery Collection & Conference in Las Vegas. "Hollywood glamour has also been driving a lot of interest in diamonds, which are everywhere these days, and consumers are going into retailers and requesting grand red-carpet looks."

Million-Dollar Rocks 2006

Let's put it this way: You've worked very hard. 2005 was a good year. Your bonus surpassed even your expectations. But only because you logged a lot of air miles and schmoozed a lot of clients, and too many nights the most important person in your life found herself going to bed alone.
So, this Valentine's Day, pink Champagne, a heart-shaped trinket or a fluffy teddy bear won't do. Not if you want her to still speak to you on Feb. 15, that is. And while you may need to rethink some of your priorities--or, at least, so she says--a good way to show that you aren't such a big jerk after all is to buy her something shiny and expensive.
If you're smart, very expensive

World's Most Expensive Diamond at $7.98 Million

3000 unique classic ring designs to customize. Quick online pricing.www.UnitedDiamonds.com
It is the ultimate diamond in the rough. And if you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it. A rareand flawless blue diamond has set a record as the most expensiveprecious jewel of its kind ever sold. The gem, which is 6.04 carats andsparkles with an unusual blue hue, is almost as breathtaking as theprice it fetched at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong. It went for an astounding US$7.98 million, or about $US1.32 million per carat.
That easily surpassed the cost of theprevious record holder known as “The Hancock Red”, which fetched a“paltry” US$926,000 per carat in 1987.
Blue diamonds are rare but not unheardof and the ones in spectacular condition almost always fetch a hugeprice. Despite this sale, the most famous remains the Hope Diamond,a 45.52 carat monster that has been owned by everyone from King LouisXIV of France to a rich socialite named Evalyn Walsh McLean. It’s thelargest gemstone of its kind ever found and now resides in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
The new record holder for price isn’tquite as large, so how it could manage to reap those sparkling bucks?Experts say it’s all in the quality of the cut and the “fancy vividblue hue”, a result of trace amounts of an element called boron in its crystal structure. That makes it worth about 10 times what a regular white diamond would bring.
So who owns this incredible piece ofjewelry? A company called Moussaieff Jewellers in London, whichspecializes in acquiring such rare specimens, ponyed up the money aftera private Asian collector decided he needed a little - or in this casea lot more - cash.
Which just goes to show you don’t always need yellow to turn a shade of blue into something green.

When you hear expensive laptops there are two things that come to mind, an Apple MacBook or those silly gold and/or diamond encrusted laptops. This morning when I saw a post in the forums titled "MOST expensive laptop ever?!?!" I was actually expecting it to be one of the usual anti-Mac type threads that pop up from time to time on every site, but as it so turns out it my assumption couldn't have been more wrong.
Right now, it appears that a tiny glitch in Lenovo's online store is causing a 12.1" ThinkPad X61s to be overpriced by about $29,000,000 USD. The good news is, if you ADD a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 to your order, it'll knock the price down by about a million bucks. This may be the first hard evidence that I've ever seen of Microsoft providing a cost savings. Fully decked out with 8G memory, a 200GB hard disk, blue tooth and more, the system will run you about $29,001,878.00 (USD) + tax and shipping and handling. Hurry and buy now, with prices this low we're sure it won't stay in stock for long!
Thanks to trudgy for the heads up in the forums! Pictures (in case they fix the issue) are available below.

World’s Most Expensive Bras

You may have heard recently that Victoria’s Secret has recently been displaying the world’s most expensive bra. It’s not true. In fact, there are several bras that we know of that were more expensive than that one, all products of Victoria’s Secret.
Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra
$5 million
Modeled by Brazil’s Adriana Lima, the bra features 3,575 black diamonds, 117 certified one-carat white round diamonds and thirty-four rubies. The bra was designed to maximize the wearer’s cleavage, an effect furthered by the two 50-carat black diamonds dangling from the center. The bra was created by celebrity jeweler Martin Katz and cost just over $5 million to make.
Heavenly 70s Fantasy Bra
$10 million
The honor doesn’t even belong to this bra modeled by Tyra Banks in 2004. Featuring 2,900 diamonds set in 10kt white gold, this Victoria’s Secret offering had a centerpiece of its own—a flawless 70-carat pear-shaped diamond. The bra was designed by jeweler Mouawad.
Star of Victoria Fantasy Bra
$10 million
This bra, made with 1,150 ruby roses and 1,600 emerald leaves, was created by Mouawad in 2002. It took over 370 hours of work to make and featured the 60-carat Mouawad Mondera diamond.
Very Sexy Fantasy Bra
$11 million
Another 370-hour Mouawad creation, the Very Sexy Fantasy bra was designed in 2003. It trumped the Star of Victoria with its 70-carat Mouawad Excelsior diamond. A replica of this bra, along with one of the Star of Victoria, was created by Mouawad for the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad.
Heavenly Star Bra
$12.5 million
Studded with 1,200 Sri Lankan pink sapphires, this bra features a 90-carat emerald cut diamond as its centerpiece. That diamond alone, in fact, is worth $10.6 million. For an additional $750,000, one could even purchase a pair of matching briefs.

Most Expensive Diamond Necklaces

An expensive diamond necklace is more than a simple accessory. It’s a statement of opulence that will set members of your family apart for generations. Check out some of the world’s most expensive diamond necklaces.
H. Stern’s Venus Necklace - $3.17 million
This 110-carat diamond necklace features a number of cushion, square and pear-cut diamonds set in 18k noble gold. Even the clasp is exquisite, featuring a 14-point diamond star. This is truly a piece that looks just as good from behind as it does from the front.
The De Beers’ Marie-Antionette Necklace - $3.7 million
From the De Beers High-Jewellery collection, this luxurious necklace features over 181 carats of mixed cut diamonds. Beneath the deep pink diamond (1.84 carats) on the first string are two yellow diamonds (5.24 and 7.06) along the second and third strings. The 8.05 carat pear-shaped white diamond hanging from the fourth string, though, is the showstopper on this beautiful piece of jewelry.
Neil Lane’s Diamond Necklace - $4 million
The 140 carats of diamonds featured on this valuable necklace feature three different cuts—pear, cushion and teardrop. The diamonds are set in platinum along the six strings that make up this necklace.
Garrard’s Heart of the Kingdom Ruby - $14 million
The most expensive necklace in the world features a 40.63-carat, heart-shaped Burmese ruby surrounded by 155 carats of diamonds. Burmese ruby is one of the most sought after varieties of ruby due to its blood-red hue. This gem is particularly valuable due to its extraordinary size—Burmese rubies rarely exceed a few carats!
The most expensive necklace can also be worn as a tiara.

Most Expensive Diamond

A Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong just made the record for the world’s most expensive diamond. The diamond in question is of a blue hue and quality cut. It was purchased by Moussaieff Jewellers of London for $7.98 million USD. Weighing in at 6.04 carats, this diamond is worth about $1.32 million USD per carat, thus beating the “Hancock Red” which sold in 1987 for a mere $926,000 per carat. The auction was held on Monday, October 8th, 2007; bidding on the most expensive diamond lasted only 8 minutes and was, reportedly, fierce.
Diamonds were first mined in India and have since become the most coveted gems. Currently, the diamond market is enriched by deposits in Russia, Botswana, Australia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The carat measurement refers to the mass of the diamond. When referring to precious gems, a carat is a fifth of a gram. The largest diamond, at 45.52 carats, is the famous Hope Diamond.Similar Posts

Material properties

A diamond is a transparent crystal of tetrahedrally bonded carbon atoms and crystallizes into the face centered cubic diamond lattice structure. Diamonds have been adapted for many uses because of the material's exceptional physical characteristics. Most notable is its extreme hardness, its high dispersion index, and extremely high thermal conductivity (900 – 2320 W/m K). Above 1700 °C (1973 K / 3583 °F), diamond is converted to graphite.[7] Naturally occurring diamonds have a density ranging from 3.15 to 3.53 g/cm³, with very pure diamond typically extremely close to 3.52 g/cm³.

Diamond

In mineralogy, diamond (from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας, adámas) is the allotrope of carbon where the carbon atoms are arranged in an isometric-hexoctahedral crystal lattice. After graphite, diamond is the second most stable form of carbon. Its hardness and high dispersion of light make it useful for industrial applications and jewelry. It is the hardest known naturally occurring mineral. It is possible to treat regular diamonds under a combination of high pressure and high temperature to produce diamonds that are harder than the diamonds used in hardness gauges.[2] Presently, only aggregated diamond nanorods, a material created using ultrahard fullerite (C60) is confirmed to be harder, although other substances such as cubic boron nitride, rhenium diboride and ultrahard fullerite itself are comparable.
Diamonds are specifically renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities; they make excellent abrasives because they can be scratched only by other diamonds, borazon, ultrahard fullerite, rhenium diboride, or aggregated diamond nanorods, which also means they hold a polish extremely well and retain their lustre. Approximately 130 million carats (26,000 kg (57,000 lb)) are mined annually, with a total value of nearly USD $9 billion, and about 100,000 kg (220,000 lb) are synthesized annually.[3]
The name diamond is derived from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας (adámas), "unbreakable, untamed", from ἀ- (a-), "un-" + δαμάω (damáō), "to overpower, to tame"[4]. They have been treasured as gemstones since their use as religious icons in ancient India. Their usage in engraving tools also dates to early human history.[5][6] Popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques, growth in the world economy, and innovative and successful advertising campaigns. They are commonly judged by the “four Cs”: carat, clarity, color, and cut.
Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources of the mineral have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. They are mined from kimberlite and lamproite volcanic pipes, which can bring diamond crystals, originating from deep within the Earth where high pressures and temperatures enable them to form, to the surface. The mining and distribution of natural diamonds are subjects of frequent controversy such as with concerns over the sale of conflict diamonds (aka blood diamonds) by African
