Fortunately, there is plenty to choose from at the top end of the jewelry market, where "big-stone" pieces from couture designers and jewelers along Fifth Avenue, Rodeo Drive and Bond Street are currently all the rage. "Diamond trading companies have done a good job of promoting single-stone and three-stone pieces recently, resulting in fewer overall unit sales, but much higher dollar value per piece," notes Nancy Robey, vice president of global new business development at the VNU Expositions Jewelry Group, which runs the Annual Couture Jewellery Collection & Conference in Las Vegas. "Hollywood glamour has also been driving a lot of interest in diamonds, which are everywhere these days, and consumers are going into retailers and requesting grand red-carpet looks."

Let's put it this way: You've worked very hard. 2005 was a good year. Your bonus surpassed even your expectations. But only because you logged a lot of air miles and schmoozed a lot of clients, and too many nights the most important person in your life found herself going to bed alone.
So, this Valentine's Day, pink Champagne, a heart-shaped trinket or a fluffy teddy bear won't do. Not if you want her to still speak to you on Feb. 15, that is. And while you may need to rethink some of your priorities--or, at least, so she says--a good way to show that you aren't such a big jerk after all is to buy her something shiny and expensive.
